I recently added a new -used- DS14 MK4 shelf to an FAS 3020 we obtained from a different department. The shelf was added without issue and the drives were there, but when I went to unassign them so I could reassign them to the controller (with the command disk assign xx.xx -s unowned), I got the error “disk assign: Disk xx.xx is not owned by this node.“ I also tried disk reassign -s <old system ID> -d <new system ID>, but it errored telling me that this can only be done in maintenance mode or during takeover in advanced mode. After a quick WebEx with a co-worker I found that disk assign xx.xx -f -s unowned did work. I then assigned the disks to the new controller and was off and running.

I was installing vmware-tools on some new Ubuntu 12.10 VMs and ran across this error:

The path “” is not a valid path to the 3.7.0-7-generic kernel headers. Would you like to change it? [yes]

After putzing around with it a bit I stumbled on this post at Juanma’s Blog that covers the workaround. The headers have moved with the 3.7 kernel and the link does the trick. The command I used was:

ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-3.7.0-7-generic/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h /lib/modules/3.7.0-7-generic/build/include/linux/

I just replaced Windows with Linux Mint 14 (kernel 3.5.x) on my laptop and found that after installing Workstation 8.0.4, it will not start, but continues to try to install the modules. After some putzing around I found this at Slack Blogs that is a great fix. Willy has written patches for the 3.1 through 3.5 kernels as well as for Workstation 9.x. Many thanks to Willy for the patches that work like a charm and for the great instructions.

From his article:

First off, remove your old VMWare installation by removing all files under these directories:
/etc/vmware*
/usr/lib/vmware*

Next, start your VMWare installation using –ignore-errors parameter like this:
./VMware-Workstation-Full-8.0.4-744019.i386.bundle –ignore-errors
After that, you download the patch that you can fetch on my SlackHacks repository. Extract it and open patch-modules_3.4.0.sh file. Edit the vmreqver line and change it into 8.0.4. Give execute permission to the bash script and start it using ./patch-modules_3.4.0.sh (use root)

It will patch and recompile all VMWare modules and in the end, it should work again

I’ve run into this a couple of times in my lab when I’ve added a drive to an ESXi host that had been formatted and used elsewhere. Going through the “Add Storage” wizard, I get the error:

Call “HostDatastoreSystem.QueryVmfsDatastoreCreateOptions” for object “ha-datastoresystem” on ESXi “xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx? failed.

The first time I ran into this was on 4.x and I was able to log into the host and use fdisk to delete partitions and then use the disk. Now with 5.1, fdisk is being deprecated and we are now supposed to use the partedUtil command, although you can still use fdisk to list the volumes to compare to the device name in the “Add Storage” wizard.

Thanks to Ballyhoo4U for the info.

First,

fdisk -l (use the output to compare to the device you are trying to add in the “Add Storage” wizard)

Then

partedUtil mklabel /dev/disks/<disk name> msdos

Now you can go back and add the storage via the wizard.

Over the weekend I upgraded my collaboration and email server from 7.2 to 8.0.2 (after performing a full backup of /opt/zimbra). I have it installed on Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS and did not yet upgrade the OS, so the Zimbra upgrade was quick and painless. The installer found the 7.2 installation and the upgrade went without a hitch.

I like the new web based appearance, as it seems a little more contemporary. The layout really isn’t too much different. In the admin console, the layout changed quite a bit and I actually like the new look more. Seems easier to navigate. The one great thing about 8.0 is the integration with Mitel and Cisco’s Unified Communications. Some other new things are:

Click2Call, voicemail, presence, and chat out-of-the-box with Cisco and Mitel

Flexible and extensible to integrate with other UC providers

Visual Voicemail with inline playback, management, and MWI status update

Call Record history of placed, received, and missed calls

Presence and click to chat from hover over contact card of any address

Tighter Active Directory integration and remote device wipe from Admin Console are two other great features for the enterprise.

My next step will be to build a 12.04 LTS server with Zimbra and then migrate over.
